Hyaluronic Acid Fillers

Augmentation of the deeper layers of the facial skin (dermis) has become a popular means of addressing contour defects that result from aging, photo-damage, trauma, scarification or disease. The procedure consists of an injection of a filler, which reduces fine lines and wrinkles, smoothes surfaces, and replaces soft-tissue volume

There are a variety of dermal fillers available, a recommended option is Restylane. Restylane is a clear hyaluronic acid based gel that once injected in the dermis increases in volume. It is a natural substance in the skin, which has been artificially synthesised, and is well tolerated with a low risk of allergic reaction. Restylane is a temporary filler, absorbed by the body over 3-6 months and requires repeated treatments. Injected fillers can be dissolved should the result be considered unsatisfactory.

The procedure occasionally requires the use of either a topical analgesic or a local anaesthetic injection. Improvements gained from dermal fillers are usually light to moderate. The procedure is technically uncomplicated.

Restylane generally performs best when used to enhance the lip or to soften lines around the mouth and cheek. Should longer-lasting results be desired, autologous fat transfer are the recommended alternative.

Suitable Candidates

Almost everyone from 25 to 70 could benefit from dermal fillers, however, they should not be used for patients with ongoing skin diseases or infections.
