Microneedling

Microneedling provides fractional stimulation of the dermis and epidermis, which activates a cascade of natural skin-regenerative processes, resulting in the formation of new collagen and elastin. Within weeks the skin becomes smoother with improved thickness and texture. The treatment is indicated for skin rejuvenation, fine lines, sun-damaged skin, acne scars and stretch marks.

Microneedling produces results similar to what can be achieved following a fractional laser treatment or a dermabrasion, but with less redness and no downtime.

Medical microneedling

The procedure is performed under topical local anesthesia. The electrical microneedling device (Dermapen) creates precise microscopic punctures, which close spontaneously within minutes, leaving the epidermis preserved and intact.

The micro-injuries trigger a release of growth factors, a proliferation of cells (such as fibroblasts and keratinocytes) and induces production of new collagen and elastin fibres. As the wound healing response is initiated within an intact tissue architecture, the outcome is tissue-remodelling, improved vascularity and a firmer, tighter skin.

The microneedling treatment is effective in rejuvenating aged and sun-damaged skin, with the forehead, cheeks, nose, periorbit, perioral and décolletage areas responding particularly well. It is also indicated for improving acne scars, atrophic scars, post-traumatic scars and stretch marks.

Combination treatments

At the Sorensen Clinic we find that microneedling enables us to restore a more youthful and healthy appearance for many of our patients. Depending on individual skin concerns, it may be recommended to combine microneedling with a therapeutic skin care protocol containing high-dose retinol (such as ZO Skin Health) in order to optimise the treatment outcome.

Patients with aged skin, facial fat atrophy or deep dermal scarring can also benefit from microneedling in combination with fat grafting. The two procedures work synergistically; the needling treatment improves skin quality and texture, while the adipose cell graft restores structural support, sub-dermal volume and facial contours.

The procedure is effective, safe and well-tolerated. Due to the low risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, microneedling is suitable for all skin types and colour. A series of treatments may be required, this will be discussed at consultation following skin assessment.

Improvement of scar tissue

Scar tissue contains dense cross-linked collagen fibres aligned in a single direction. Microneedling stimulates a remodelling of the collagen fibres to a natural random 'basket weave' formation. Gradually, the treated scar tissue becomes softer, smoother and less noticeable.
